Basecamp Foundation Kenya

Basecamp works among one of the marginalized communities in Kenya by implementing and partnering in projects in the areas of health, education, empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Our mission is “to leave a positive foot print” by undertaking and supporting sustainable development projects. For over a decade, the foundation has spearheaded the establishment of Naboisho community conservancy. The conservancy growth was based on an approach where land owners agreed to lease their parcels of land for wildlife conservation & management. Land lease for conservation is viewed as a viable land use, integrated with managed grazing to create a vibrant ecosystem for the community, wildlife and tourism.

Our projects are based in Narok South, Koyaki location, within the Naboisho Conservancy. This is an arid/ semi-arid savannah area; whose main attraction is the Maasai Mara game reserve. The reserve hosts some of the world’s most magnificent and endangered wildlife species. The community in this region are mainly pastoralists and mainly depend on the land for grazing their large herds of livestock for livelihood

The Weaving Process

Using sisal leaves, grown on their own farms, our women artisans handmake each woven basket. This is a skill passed on from mother to daughter. The women begin by carefully cutting and collecting the sisal leaves, draining the liquid in order to extract fibres. They then dye the strands with natural dyes for vibrant colours and leave them out to dry, before the begin weaving and designing the baskets. All our Bahati Baskets are customized according to specific designs we decide with the weavers.

Maasai Beads

Traditionally made by the Maasai tribe, located in Southern Kenya, the Maasai women have been creating beaded jewellery for generations. Maasai women consider it a duty to create beautiful beaded jewellery and accessories. A unique craft which is worn by both men and women in the tribe these pieces accompany the member of the tribe through all stages of life. The colours of the beads all have different meanings and the structure of the beaded pieces can indicate the age, social status, marital status.
